Presbyteral Council

The Presbyteral Council is composed of a mix of elected, appointed, and ex-officio members. The membership of the Council shall consist of the following: the Archbishop, who shall be the Council's President; one priest elected as representative from each deanery; Four diocesan priests' representatives (one shall be chosen from each of four ordination-period groups); One representative of the retired priests of the Archdiocese chosen by that body; Three religious priests' representatives, elected at large by the religious priests serving in the Archdiocese; additional priests may be appointed by the Archbishop.  Ex-officio members include  Auxiliary Bishops, the Vicars General of the Archdiocese, the Rector of Notre Dame Seminary, the Chancellor, and the Executive Director of  Clergy.

Function 

The Presbyteral Council represents the priests of the Archdiocese of New Orleans and serves as a “senate to the bishop” to assist him in governance of the diocese according to the norms of law and to promote the pastoral good of the people of God of the Archdiocese of New Orleans.  It has its own statutes as approved by the Archbishop.  The Council meets six times a year.  The Archbishop, in consultation with the elected members of the Council (Vice-Chair and Secretary), determines the questions to be considered by the Council.  Proposals for business from the members are to be considered in the weeks leading up to the monthly meeting.  The Presbyteral Council possesses only a consultative vote unless consent is required by law.  The Council cannot act without the Diocesan Bishop.
