The Deaf Apostolate is under the Department of Pastoral Planning Services and provides assistance to the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing population through pastoral, educational and social services. The office also serves as a resource center.
To serve the needs of the Deaf Catholic Community and their families throughout the
Archdiocese of New Orleans.
Part of the philosophy of the Deaf Apostolate is that the Deaf have a right to participate within the Catholic Church and in parish functions/activities –the same as the hearing. Definition of the term Deaf Apostolate includes individuals that are Deaf, Deaf/Blind, have Usher Syndrome, congenital and non-congenital deafness, Rubella Syndrome and latent deafness. Therefore, Sign Languages, Oral, Tactile (Deaf-Blind), Minimal Language Skill and Bilingual Interpreters need to be identified and available.
