Saint Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890 in Corinaldo, Italy. She is known for her commitment to purity and her courageous defense of the faith.
Born to a poor farm working family, her father moved the family to Ferrier di Conca, where he later died from malaria. Her mother struggled to support the family, yet they managed as a family. Goretti took on the household duties and cared for her younger siblings. Every night she would pray the rosary for the soul of her father.
On July 5, 1902, Alessandro Serenelli, an 18-year-old neighbor, attacked her and attempted to have his way with her. She resisted his attempts, emphasizing the sinfulness of the act. This only enraged him more leading Alessandro to stab her 14 times. She was taken to the nearest hospital in an attempt to save her life.
Despite being severely injured, Maria forgave Alessandro on her deathbed, expressing her wish for him to join her in Heaven. The following day she died.
Alessandro was sentenced to 30 years in prison, initially unrepentant. However, he experienced a vision of Maria offering him 14 lilies, which led to his conversion. Upon release, he sought forgiveness from her mother, which she granted. Alessandro lived the rest of his life as a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery.
Saint Maria Goretti was canonized in 1950 by Pope Pius XII, her mother in attendance, becoming the youngest officially recognized saint.
She is known as the patron saint against poverty, against the death of parents, children, young women, martyrs, the poor, victims of rape, and young people.
