Today, January 1, 2026, we begin a new year – one filled with hope and anticipation of the blessings this year will bring. It is good that we look forward with Christian hope and trust in the Lord to new beginnings in this new year.
In the midst of our celebrations, let us not forget the somber news that many of us woke to on January 1, 2025 as we learned that 15 people had lost their lives in a terrorist attack on Bourbon Street here in New Orleans. Let us pray for them and let us pray for the families and friends that mourn their deaths.
Let us pray too for peace in our hearts, in our homes, in our community, and in our world. As we pray at each Mass in “Our Family Prayer”, let us be peacemakers of our time and let us ask God to “give us the perseverance to be a voice for life and human dignity in our community.” Let us give thanks to God for the gift of our faith and for the gift of a new year.
As we begin 2026, know of my prayers for you and I ask for you to pray for our local church and for me. God is faithful!
